TAKE A LOOK

“I will return, Mr. Winstrom,” he said. “And when I do, we’ll take our revenge. Together.”
He muttered something in a foreign language, in speech that sounded distinctly like Latin. Having learned basic Latin as a child, Jason quickly drowned out the sounds of the streets and concentrated on the man’s words.
Umbra vivit, the man whispered in reverence before he backed into a wall and phased through it in a fogged haze.
After the mayhem of the night, Jason allowed his mind to cling to the words, searching his memory for a translation that would leave him satisfied. But upon figuring it out, he was only left more unsettled.
Umbra vivit, he repeated in his mind grimly. The shadow lives on.

VICTORIA PEX

The thunder rumbled loudly and shook the house. Victoria Pex was startled awake from her deep sleep by the sheer impact of the storm outside. Unlike most people, under normal circumstances the sound of a storm soothed Victoria. However she remembered today had been the day of the funeral of her grandmother, and she felt the heavy melancholy return.

She couldn’t believe her grandmother was gone. She didn’t know how she was going to go on without Grandma’s wit, her subtle sarcasm or her unquestioning love and pride in Victoria no matter what she did. She had truly lost her best friend and the only person who knew the real Victoria Pex, all her dark secrets, all her insecurities and fears and loved her despite everything. From now on she would have to pretend to be the Victoria Pex everyone else knew her as.

Victoria raised her arm and stared at the ring she had inherited from grandma on her finger. It was entirely too big for her and too grand. However for today having it on her finger made her feel closer to grandma. The stones on the ring glistened in the semi darkness. It was one big sapphire surrounded by diamonds. The ring itself was a few hundred years old. It had been passed down in the family for centuries. Victoria had been touched that grandma had chosen her as its new owner. She knew her mother had been displeased when the will had been read. However, she found it funny that grandma had left everyone with this last surprise even after she was gone.

“I am going to miss you so much grandma. I feel so alone without you”, Victoria whispered to the ring, thinking back to the funeral this morning. It had been a very small private event. Grandma had been buried in the family cemetery on their estate. Her parents had gone out of their way to keep the news of the funeral out of the media’s attention. In fact the only attendees had been her parents, Victoria, her estranged Aunt Elisabeth with her husband and daughters, and Victoria’s boyfriend Noah...

CHRISTOPHER ERKENS

Life had been kind to him, thought Chris as he jogged his final mile for the morning. His morning runs were his favorite part of the day. Every day as soon he woke up he went for his run on Michigan Avenue. The people, the stores, the legendarily beautiful Lake Michigan were serene at this time of the morning. It was his time to reflect on his life. Today was going to be a busy day. It was the first day of school. He had been Principal at the prestigious School for six years now, and was proud to acknowledge that the school had only thrived and become even more famous in his time here. All his life he had wondered what the purpose of his life was. Despite being the most academically gifted out of his siblings, he had never taken an interest in the business back home. When he had earned a full scholarship to one of the Ivy- league colleges, he had not thought twice before moving to the East coast and leaving his family behind in the Midwest. He had thought maybe it was the small town living that had been leading to his dissatisfaction. However once settled and again academically thriving in college, he had experienced the same sense of emptiness. No matter how many courses he took, or how many sports teams he joined, he just hadn’t seemed to be able to fill the emptiness inside him. In fact, the busier he got, the emptier he had felt...
